How to Care for Zamioculcas Zamifolia Interior Plant

Zamioculcas zamifolia has become quite a popular interior plant. In my job in the interior landscape industry, the Zamioculcas zamifolia had shown up on a lot of desks and in quite a few cubicles. Most people know this plant as the ZZ Plant because, let’s face it, the botanical name is quite a mouthful.

How to Care for Zamioculcas Zamifolia Interior Plant

Having taken care of many ZZ Plants myself, I have found that it is an easy plant to keep in good condition in an interior situation as long as it is receiving good bright light.

If you try to grow a ZZ Plant in poor lighting, it will become very leggy and weak. Place your ZZ Plant in the brightest light available. No direct sun needed.

Light for ZZ Plant

To get the best results, place your ZZ Plant in bright, indirect light. Some morning sun will not hurt it but do avoid hot, direct sun. A spot near a large window or a shaded spot in a sunroom would be perfect.

Watering ZZ Plant

Water your ZZ Plant when the soil has just dried almost to the bottom of the root mass. Always check the soil of your interior plants before your water, using your hands or some type of moisture meter. Watering just because is never a good idea when caring for interior plants.

Other ZZ Plant Care

Avoid the temptation to pot your ZZ Plant into an extra large pot or planter. They do well when kept a little bit root bound. Repot only when the roots have almost completely filled the grow pot.

Depending on the light your plant receives, it may never need repotting. I say this because the light your plant receives is the main thing that influences your plant’s growth, both above and below the soil.

Check your plant once a week to see if it needs water. Water only if needed. Turn your plant half a turn to keep the growth even on all sides. You should always remove yellowing, brown, and dead or dying stems or leaves. Wiping your ZZ Plants leaves with a dry, clean cloth can help keep the dust from accumulating on the glossy, green leaves.

You can feed your plant once a month during spring and summer with a light application of water soluble plant food added to the water. Be careful using plant fertilizers, over use can damage your interior plants.

Propagating Your ZZ Plant

You can grow more plants from your single plant by dividing the root mass and planting each separate plant into new pots. You can also grow new plants from stem cuttings. This will take much longer to produce a new plant so if you are in a hurry, divide the plant and repot each part.

I hope your ZZ Plant does well. If you have questions about your ZZ Plant and its care, you can visit the contact page and send a question.
